11.27-11.29 // Thanksgiving Break - No School!
This week in gym, we reviewed all of our basketball skills and drills. We put all of our skills together and ended class with a small scrimmage. Everyone had a chance to play on different teams. Nice job everyone! How many jumping jacks can you do in a minute? In 7th grade math we were hard at work to get some real data to support our unit all about rates. From jumping jacks per minute to heart beats per minute we got our workout in! We discussed if we could do 33 jumping jacks in one minute then if we had five minutes, we should be able to do 165 jumping jacks through the use of equivalent rates. Here are some pictures of us in action as well as the results of our mini workout! 6th graders are continuing to learn about ancient civilizations and this week, they did so through some role play! Students worked in groups with each of the 5 students having a role from high priest, middle class, the workers and the untouchables. They all assumed their respective roles immediately. It was very hard for the untouchables as they weren’t allowed to speak and had to sit in chairs that were smaller than the rest. We can confidently say that they will not forget this day in the weeks to come! A friendly reunion occurred on Tuesday night! All the alumni from Brush Creek Ranch gathered at The Field Museum this week to see new and old friends! We shared memories from our trip this past summer and heard from alumni from the very first trip in 2000! Thanks to all who attended and for Big Shoulders for everything they do for us! Looking Ahead...

This week in I&S, the 6th graders presented their Ancient Mesopotamia Invention Projects. Each student chose a different invention from the time period including the wheel and the first map. Each poster included a title written in cuneiform as well as pictures and how that invention has impacted the world we live in today. 8th Grade this week was joined by our guest speaker from Charles Schwab to choose which stocks we will invest in. First we learned about diversifying our portfolio and when the best time to invest is. Then, as a class, we discussed which stocks we believe are going to give us the biggest return before the end of the year. The 8th graders decided to invest in Disney, Starbucks, Microsoft, and Home Depot. We will reconvene next month to check our progress and decide if we want to make any trades. Students in Ms. Olsen’s Earth Science class used the four steps of inference to construct maps of the world. Later, they researched the various landforms of the world’s regions, ultimately testing their geographic knowledge in a game of Jeopardy! 7th Grade’s inequality unit > all other units. Students were hard at work this week ahead of their unit test on inequalities. To review, we worked in partners to solve problems that used inequality symbols and then match to the correct graphs. Students used the ATL (Approaches to Learning) skills of communication and collaboration in order to be successful. 6th grade presented their anti bullying projects this week in L&L. Students explored the theme of the novel Wonder through original visuals, skits, and songs. Check out some of the presentations in action! This week the Junior High continued the basketball unit. Students worked on many drills that involved shooting a basketball from different angles of the court. They also focused our time on layups just in time for basketball season to start. Check out our Junior High teams playing every weekend! Looking Ahead...

BASKETBALL- The unit that we have all been waiting for! We focused on basic skills such as dribbling and passing. We also used our concentration skills and hand eye coordination to dribble two mini basketballs at the same time while walking. Excellent job junior high! Fractions in action. 6th grade explored equivalent fractions with fraction tiles this week in math. Fraction tiles are the perfect visual and kinesthetic tool for us to see how a combination of fractions can be equivalent. Students loved the hands on exploration during class! Student Voice met this week to discuss a multitude of upcoming events. They noticed that a big issue among junior high students is stress and anxiety. Therefore, their goal for the year is to help combat that issue in all of their events. They have some exciting things planned, stay tuned! 8th grade reviewed compound inequalities this week prior to their quiz. To do so, they worked in pairs to solve problems. Once they found the answer, they graphed them and matched it to the correct interval notation. This was no easy task, but students took their time and communicated with their partners to answer all the questions! Looking Ahead...

Prime or composite? 6th grade students used a 100’s chart to differentiate the prime numbers from the composite numbers. If a number is composite, meaning it has more than 2 factors, it was highlighted. Now that we know our composite numbers up to 100, we can quickly find greatest common factors, common denominators, and simplify fractions. In addition to our football unit, the students worked on their team building skills with a game called “The Polar Express.” They worked in teams to transfer hula hoops from one end of the gym and back. It took communication and collaboration from everyone in order to succeed.Great job everyone! This Thursday, we traded our uniforms for some festive Halloween costumes and even the snow couldn’t stop us from pulling out all the stops! From pop culture icons and our favorite drinks to dressing up as teachers, we saw it all! We love seeing all the creativity, Happy Halloween! This Friday, the Junior High enjoyed a cultural experience. We began the day by celebrating All Saints Day Mass with the entire school. We then ventured to Pilsen to enjoy a wonderful lunch at La Cebollita in order for the kids to use their Spanish skills. The students all enjoyed their meals and spending time with their friends across grade levels. We then ventured on the the National Mexican Fine Arts Museum for a guided tour of the Dia De Los Muertos exhibit and to learn more about the history of this cultural celebration. It connects perfectly with the Catholic celebration of All Saints Day. ¡Feliz día de muertos! Looking Ahead...
