This week we continued using our badminton skills in PE. Students were divided into smaller teams and they played against each other on the court. Students were demonstrating good sportsmanship throughout the game. Way to go! Our stock market challenge continues! This week Mark met with us to discuss how a PE ratio impacts the value of stocks. Following our presentation we took a look at our current stock portfolio to see if we wanted to keep our stocks or make a trade. We chose to trade our stock in Disney for stock in Visa. We’ll keep monitoring it to see if we made a good choice! Have you ever heard of Kletzmer? Or Ska? What does nature music sound like? The JH students are doing a mini unit exploring music genres. Students, working in pairs or independently, selected an obscure music genre to research and will present their findings to the class in the next few weeks. This Sunday, following the Children’s Mass, we opened the doors to the St. Matthias community for our Open House! All the JH teachers and students gathered in the gym to show off what they’ve been working on in class. There were math projects and L&L skits with students leading the way every step of the way. Thank you to all who attended, we loved seeing all of your smiling faces! St. Matthias kicked off our annual Boosterthon Fun Run Fundraiser this week! We all met in the gym for a pep rally to kick everything off! We are halfway to our goal of raising $20,000 to finance new lockers for the JH students as well as a bathroom update. Visit funrun.com to help us meet and exceed our goal! Looking Ahead...

(pictured above) This week in PE, we started a Badminton unit. Students learned basic to advance skills such as learning the forehand and backhand grip. We learned how to properly serve and successfully play badminton while using a net. Well done! (pictured below) 7th graders have been working hard over the last few weeks creating and designing their dream house! Through our rates and rations unit they discovered how scale factor is used in scale drawings and blueprints. With that in mind, they collaborated first on a scale drawing of our classroom. Then they started dreaming of bigger and bigger projects so they created a scale drawing of their dream house! You can tell students were dreaming when they included snack rooms, indoor pools, and even a roller skating rink! After learning about colors, rhetorical devices, and expressive portrait composition; MYP students used photoshop to creat positive propaganda posters promoting the IB traits in Design Technology. Check out some of the results below! On Saturday night, our students gathered in the gym for our first JH dance of the year! There was music, dancing, food, ping pong, and a photo booth! Thanks to everyone who helped make the night possible including Student Voice Committee! Shoutout to the 7th grade boys and the 7th/8th grade girls basketball teams! The 7th grade boys won their championship at the Immaculate Conception/ Talcott tournament this past weekend. The 7th/8th grade girls won against FXW this past weekend as well. The girls will be heading to play in the Jr. NBA All Star Invitational Elite Eight on 2/14 at Navy Pier! Congrats! Go Mustangs! Looking Ahead...
1.20 // MLK Day - No School! 1.26 // Catholic Schools Week Mass @ 10am 1.26 // Open House @ 11:30am - Come in Uniform for a Dress Down Pass! 2.4 // 8th Grade Graduation Pictures This week in PE, we did a variety of activities. Some classes reviewed our folk dances such as the Fjaskern and the Sasha dance. Other classes continued the fitness tests such as the curl ups and the push ups. We also played a new game called “Blanket Ball!” Students were paired up with partners and were given a towel and a ball. Their goal was to communicate with one another and use teamwork in order to launch the ball in the air and then catch it back in the towel. Great job junior high! All of our Junior High students have been brainstorming ideas for their grade level service project. The 7th graders got into pairs to research an issue in our world that we could address with our service project. Some of the issues that our students are looking to address include the recent wildfires in Australia, finding sustainable resources, and helping the rising homelessness population. We will keep you updated on what these 7th graders choose but in the meantime, the 6th graders are organizing a service project to help address Women’s education in Africa. Stay tuned to see how you can help them get the supplies that they need! Following the completion of our unit of ratios and proportions, 7th graders are applying what they learned to real life through scale drawings! They started by making a scale drawing of our classroom. The first step to making it was to find the dimensions of the classroom and all of the furniture inside so students got their yard sticks and rulers and started measuring! Once they gathered all of their data, they converted their measurements using the scale 1cm = 12in. This turned out to be no easy task as a lot of collaboration and clear communication was needed. We came back from break to sunny day on the playground. You wouldn’t have thought we were on winter break with the lack of snow and boots but we aren’t complaining! The Junior High students loved catching up with their friends during recess and getting back to their football games. Leave a comment of your favorite memory from over winter break for a Mustang Buck! Looking Ahead...
