6th graders made their own volcanoes! They investigated how different amounts of gas in magma could change how the volcano model erupted. The noticed that less-gassy magma has a slower, smoother eruption where more-gassy magma was more explosive. The seventh and eighth graders have been presenting their radio broadcasts to their classmates the last couple of weeks. The groups presented their broadcasts chronologically starting with the 1930's and ended with the 2000's. It was a historical adventure listening to the music from those decades and explaining how moments in history were affected by it. All the groups presented engaging broadcasts complete with commercials from back in the day. In the spirit of Halloween, 6th graders had a pumpkin matching activity to practice our orders of operation skills. Each pumpkin was cut in half with a problem on top and students had to work together to find the matching bottom with the corresponding answer. Students worked in groups in order to complete the task and were able to help each other correct any mistakes their group mates made. 8th graders, in L&L, are close to finishing up Life of Pi, but while they’re still working on the novel, they participated in a very insightful three days of student-led Socratic Seminar discussions as well as a literary device scavenger hunt/display of the recently read chapters. Student Council sold apple cider on Friday morning! The whole school lined up to purchase a cup of hot or cold apple cider to start the day. Thanks to all who participated! Student Council will be back out there on Friday, November 9th selling apple cider for $1. See you there! On Thursday, 7th and 8th graders participated in our 2nd annual GoApe Field Trip. We spent the day encouraging each other, working together, persevering, taking risks, facing our fears and exploring with our classmates. Everyone was able to complete all 5 sites where we encountered zip lines, rope bridges, wood obstacles and the Tarzan Swing. It was a day filled with adventure and one that we all will not forget. Thank you to all the chaperones who braved this difficult course and took time out of their day to spend it with us. We are all so thankful. Check out some pictures below! Looking Ahead...

We are very much looking forward to our second annual trip to GoApe! on Thursday, October 25 with the 7th & 8th grades. A few things to remember:
Below are the groups. Partner pairings are organized by the numbers on the left: 1&2 are partners, 3&4 are partners, 5&6, 7&8, and 9&10 are partner pairs. For example: Casey and Tyler are partners, Margaret and Jessica are partners, Carson and Diego, etc. Your chaperones are also in order. Ex: Mr. Sheehan will be the chaperone for Casey & Tyler, and a teacher will chaperone Jonathan & Kelsey. Please be attentive to when your group is called and be aware of who your partner and assigned chaperone are. The "staff" chaperones in Group 1 are Ms. Kanaley, Ms. Lyne, and Ms. Wickert. Ms. Kanaley & Ms. Wickert will repeat the course with Group 5. Looking forward to the trip! See you early Thursday morning and enjoy your day off.
Sincerely, The JH Team 8th graders are wrapping up their unit on The Chemistry of Materials. They acted as materials engineers and evaluated 4 different proposals for greener computer choices for a school district to choose. They analyzed the different stages in the life cycle of the computers and presented their findings. Great job! 6th grade added their thoughts to the IB Learner Profile bulletin board for the Month of October. Being as Enthusiastic as Cookie Monster they added speech bubbles to his image to express their thoughts about how art can express different ideas by the way it is drawn even if the subject is the same. What's in YOUR breakfast? 6th Grade investigated different cereal options this week-collecting data on ingredients, protein, and carbohydrate content from nutrition labels. Students then organized the data and drew conclusions about health and connections between the cereals. We have been studying the Agricultural Revolution in I&S, and how for the first time humans have a stable food supply, containing grains. We also had a few samples of cereal! (**Kashi Go Lean Honey Almond Flax was a big hit!) Attack of the Invasive Species!!! 7th graders have spent the first part of this year researching an invasive species. They determined why it's invasive, how it impacts its environment, and concerns moving forward if nothing is done to remove the species. They acted as ecologists who presented the information to the Department of Natural Resources and stated whether or not they should take action to remove the species from its environment by weighing the tradeoffs involved. They did an amazing job and were very informative! On Friday, the 6th grade class journeyed to Covenant Harbor in Lake Geneva, WI for a day of adventure and risk-taking on a high ropes course and zipline! All students set goals for themselves and worked to achieve them on the various obstacles they encountered. Teachers, chaperones, and students encouraged each other as they climbed the big rock wall to get to the zip line. It was no easy task! It was a great day of team building! Hail Holy Queen... 6th Grade is learning different ways to pray this year and all of the prayers of the rosary. We worked on labeling the parts of the rosary with colorful post-it notes this, so we know exactly when to pray what! 8th graders continue to investigate chemical reactions! In this activity, they tested the effectiveness of three different metals - copper, iron, and aluminum - in extracting copper from a copper chloride solution. They conducted chemical reactions that resulted in some of the metals to bind with copper, while others left the copper in its original solution. The copper left in the solution made a beautiful blue color! 6th graders are sharpening their decimal operation skills this week! With problems hanging around the room, students got out of their seats to solve problems. Students were careful to show their work, line up the decimal points, and regroup when necessary. Watch out for these Mathematicians! In the spirit of practicing our Geography skills, JH students have set geography goals and are taking various steps to achieve them. 6th graders in particular will find out this upcoming week if they met their goal! The map to the left has the name missing from the country in the middle. Comment below the name of the country for a ticket! Clue: Australopithecus Afarensis skeleton was discovered here! Looking Ahead...

They had then speak the delgates position on the major issues facing the new country, and how the Founding Fathers achieved compromise. In I&S, students are studying the first people to live in a community, and how they solved problems like a lack of water or attacks. Then they did group problem solving activity where students had to make a cup pyramid using only a rubber band and string. Each group member had to use communication and thinking skills to be the first to stack the cups! A large group of students from the eighth grade class gathered in the lobby of the school to sell Mrs. Carden's yummy caramels, out of uniform passes, Lou Malnati's pizza certificates, and wonderful herbs from our school garden during Curriculum night. All of their efforts are to support their class trip at the end of the year to Washington D.C.! The total profit from that night was $657.50!! A huge thank you to all that contributed! 6th graders designed and carried out their own experiments this week! They tested to see if the speed of waves affected the amount of erosion on a cliff. They worked through the scientific design process and are working on analyzing results! The eighth grade students enjoyed a group shadow day at Loyola Academy on Thursday. They shared lots of stories about their day. One student said they even had to take a quiz! Another said she helped her shadow with her math homework. Impressive! All students thought the cafeteria food was amazing! It was a great day for the whole class to experience a day of high school together.
