Ball control + Balance = Success! Excellent job juggling the ball with your knees 7A!! In 8th Grade Individuals and Society, students are preparing for their Hamilton versus Jefferson Debate. They are debating viewpoints on national banks, agriculture/environment, power distribution and the constitution. Stay tuned for the results! 6th grade started the week by evaluating mathematical expressions! They even were able to share their hard work with the class, great work! The Junior High ventured out to Wisconsin this week for a day full of team building and exploring! We took all the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders to Boundless Adventures to climb in the trees, zip line, and hike the trails! Up in the trees! Boundless Adventures was filled with obstacles at three different heights. Students had to maneuver their harness through tunnels, across bridges, on swings, and across zip lines to get to different platforms. Students were exemplifying what it means to be an IB learner throughout the entire day! They were being risk takers and open minded by trying new things and going against their normal. They were being great communicators by encouraging their classmates and giving advice to each other for each obstacle. Overall, it was the perfect day to be outside with our classmates and try new things! A very special shoutout to Victoria in 7th grade who had her last day at St. Matthias this week! You will be greatly missed by all, good luck at your new school! Looking Ahead...

The 7th and 8th graders were visited by some new and old faces this week during the catholic schools information day. Representatives from schools all over the Chicago area, including Loyola Academy and DePaul College Prep, came to the Dank Haus to tell our students about their respective school environments. The JH students listened carefully and asked questions about everything from class sizes and IB programs to sports teams and lunch options. They were all inquirers! Later in the day some SMS alumni returned to talk about their experiences at their selected schools. It was awesome to see our alumni thriving at their school! Thank you to all who gave advice to our 7th and 8th graders! Halfway through Catholic Schools Information Day, the JH took a break for the very first Hot Dog Day! A special thanks to Mrs. McGovern who brought the food over to the Dank Haus for us! Thanks to all the parents who volunteered as well! Hot Dog Day is the best! This week, 6th grade students built prototypes for mitigating erosion. In this scenario, students had to protect citizens at the bottom of a steep hill from a landslide. Off to the races! Our St. Matthias Cross Country Team has been working hard to improve their race times. Then at their meet on Thursday they did just that! Congrats to all who raced! Looking Ahead...

Everyone had lots of energy and enthusiasm during our soccer game! Keep it up! What’s in a name? Pictured below are the 8th graders and their name projects for I&S. Students had to research the origin, meaning, and the reason why their parents gave them their first and middle names. There were a multitude of fun facts that each student discovered when they were researching both online and in the conversations with their parents. 7th graders teaching the class two step equations. They loved helping their peers! 7th grade spent the week in L&L collaborating on analyzing character types from different media. They used every surface available to spread out and get all of their ideas across. 8th Grade is reading a chapter book for spanish! The book is called "The Secret Agents of Picasso" and students analyze and build their vocabulary while they read each chapter. The sweat was falling down everyone's forehead during gym this week. Check out 8th grade doing their ladder drills! Nice job! The Junior High played a major role in the ceremony in remembrance of 9/11. the 8th graders shared prayers, and held a scroll of all of those who tragically lost their lives that day. 7th graders, Kyle and Frances, shared stories of their family members that are first responders. Then all of our Junior High Students made cards for the firefighters and police officers that keep us safe everyday. On Tuesday, we participated in a dress down day to raise money for lunch for the first responders that attended the ceremony. Thanks to everyone for getting involved!

6th graders working on Evaluating Algebraic Expressions in Honors Math class. They are loving math class and using both the online textbook and hard copy of the textbook. The 8th graders had a structured academic controversy this week. They stood at the “Vox Populi” podium sharing their voice on the sustainability of raw materials including plastic, aluminum, and glass. In the end, Aluminum won the debate! 6th graders in I&S have been learning all about Pangea this week. Here are some pictures of them working hard to complete their maps! The sixth and seventh grades are having a great time researching their Radio Broadcast projects in music class. Each group is researching a decade from the 1940’s to the 2000’s and finding songs that influenced the time period and significant historical events. The students will present their broadcasts to their classmates in a few weeks. The 6th graders took over for Ms. Lyne this week to teach their classmates about ordering whole numbers to the trillions from least to greatest. They had multiple examples and great reasoning to support each of their answers. Looking Ahead...
