We had our KABOOM! Playground Ribbon Cutting Day on Tuesday -- Kathryn McGovern, Student Council President, was selected to cut the ribbon. We are so grateful and excited for all the memories yet to be made on this new equipment, and thank all who were involved. Seventh grade engaged in their third round of literature circles this week. Students have done a great job of delving deep into the themes of alienation and belonging as they read the memoirs of Holocaust survivors 8th grade celebrated the end of their Stock Market Program with a capstone field trip downtown, held at the Goodman Theater. Students listened to a career panel & participated in a mock investor’s meeting. Our school ended up with just over $3500 in their portfolio, after beginning with $3000, outperforming the S&P 500! We then had some fun at a few downtown landmarks-the Bean and Maggie Daley park! The junior high had a spectacular time celebrating the arts this past Thursday evening. Their performance of "Summer Camp" was amazing and was a true reflection of all of their hard work and preparation. Congrats to all!! Looking ahead...

6th grade applied their knowledge of fractions to recipes this week. From muffins and cookies to crepes and brownies, we had it all! Students learned that math has a lot more to do with baking and cooking then they initially thought. When converting a recipe to serve more or less people the recipe will still taste the same as long as we multiply by the same fraction. Thanks for all the tasty treats! 8th graders completed their LAST lab experiment! They designed an experiment to determine the role of sunscreen: does sunscreen absorb or reflect UV? In their lab reports, they analyzed the possible implications this has on human health and the usefulness of sunscreen. Sixth grade students made a lot of progress on their L&L summative assessments! Students have been working hard to create games that incorporate the dystopian motifs from The Giver. Some are creating board games, some are creating video games, and all will produce a final write-up on their creative processes. Looking ahead...
5.24 // Spring Show 5.28 // No School-Memorial Day 5.30 // 8th Grade Trip 6.1 // 8th Grade Graduation 6.8 // Last Day of School! Last Friday was the Big Shoulders Entrepreneur Competition! A group of our own SMS inquirers and risk-takers showcased the business plan that they developed and presented to a panel of judges from Ernst and Young. They have been working on this business plan since January and their hard work paid off. Their idea was to create an app called Share'n'Wear, in which you can rate clothing and outfits in order to promote confidence in the wearer rather than create a culture of negativity, like much of social media can be these days. They made a thorough business plan, a clear presentation, and confidently presented. We are very proud of their hard work! Remember to #DressConfidently with @share.n.wear! 8th students investigated the transmission, absorption, and reflection of waves. In this activity, they went outside and measured how much infrared and ultraviolet light was selectively transmitted through three different films. They collected data and compared the three films for their selectivity. Unfortunately, it wasn't as sunny as we would have liked, but the students still carried out a great experiment and successfully collected data! Junior High Students woke up early on Saturday morning to participate in the 2nd annual Josephinum Math Competition. The event consisted of both individual and team events as students worked to solve 9th grade level problems. In the end, St. Matthias won 3rd place in the team competition. We are so proud of the work these students put into this event! Great job everyone! Aloha! Leis, ukuleles, grass skirts, and more were at our Hawaiian themed dance on Friday night! The gym was filled with students, pizza. and great music! Student Council organized a raffle which included gift cards as well as a candy basket. Shout out to Juan, Lanya, and Hannah the lucky winners! Looking ahead...
5.15 // 8th Grade Stock Market Field Trip 5.24 // Spring Show 5.28 // No School-Memorial Day 5.30 // 8th Grade Trip 6.1 // 8th Grade Graduation 6.8 // Last Day of School! The 7th and 8th graders want downtown to the Lyric Opera on Thursday to see the production of "Jesus Christ Superstar". What a wonderful way to end their Opera unit. They really enjoyed the spectacular production (and the snacks at intermission)! The 7th graders spoke very highly of the artistic choices that were made by the singer/actors and by the director during their music class on Friday. All students will be writing a detailed reflection sharing their observations and opinions about all that they saw and heard. Being able to watch an amazing production in such a beautiful space was a great experience for all! 7th graders dove right into their new unit on genetics this week! They collected class data on some common genetic characteristics: eye color, height vs. wingspan, double-jointed ability, tongue rolling ability, and PTC taste testing ability (yuck!). According to class data, we determined the more dominate traits in our class. As we continue through the unit, we’ll analyze how these traits are determined! The spring show is right around the corner and the junior high classes are working very hard to prepare their scenes. The eighth graders selected "It's a Bear" and may remind you a bit of Michael Jackson's "Thriller". They are doing an awesome job! The spring show is Thursday, May 24th at 6:30 p.m. in the school gym. All students in the IB MYP programme are required to be at this event. It fulfills a performing arts requirement. In L&L, 7th grade participated in a book “tasting.” They sampled each of the four books that we will use for book clubs for our cross-curricular unit with I&S. They took notes on each book and ranked them from first choice to last. Students chose from books with a range of writing styles, genres, and levels of difficulty, all centering on the Holocaust. 6th Grade recently finished a summative assessment, a student-written and directed play from a selection in the Old Testament. Students read and evaluated different Bible stories-the story of Passover, the Exodus, the Covenant at Mount Sinai, and Joshua bringing down the walls at Jericho. Then, they crafted scrips with play directions, props and all! 7th grade hosted Mass this week for Cinco de Mayo. Some of our classmates read in Spanish and we had a great time preparing for our final Mass of the year! This week in Math, 7th grade completed their Volume and Surface Area Unit by creating 3-D models. As a class we read an article about the 62 acre land that is undeveloped in South Loop. If we were to develop this land, what would it need? We researched various needs such as hospitals, public transportation, affordable housing, public art, and even some sport facilities. Students wrote a proposal to address those needs and then built a model of what they want the area to look like. Chicago's skyline could be changing soon with all of these ideas in mind! |
