4.4 // 6th grade Dancing with Class Competition
4.12 // Talent Show
4.13 - 4.24 // Spring Break!
Students investigated light transmission, absorption, and reflection by testing the temperatures and UV rating of three different types of films. They were able to see how different waves, like IR and UV, travel in our atmosphere even though we are not able to see them! 6th graders had their final dancing with class practice on Friday! Students were chosen to perform one dance like the Merengue or Bachata. Everyone watched as we simulated how the final competition will look on Thursday. The 6th graders did a great job cheering on their classmates and helping them to perfect their dance moves. The dances are looking great! We can’t wait to see everyone perform on THursday! See you all there! Get in the game! The spring music and art show was on Thursday, which showcased the songs and art projects 3rd-8th graders had been working on the past couple of months. The walls of the SMS gym were lined with art projects including self portraits and phone case designs. Then students took to the stage to sing and dance! There were some soccer balls flying, roses thrown, and skateboarders throughout the night! A special shoutout goes to Ms. Reckamp for all her hard work in preparing this fantastic show. Also to Mr. O for his hard work and artistic vision for the show! It was a great night, check out some performance pictures below! Looking Ahead...

6th graders are exploring the moon phases! They used a physical models to mimic how the moon moves in relation to the sun and to Earth, and how that translates to various shadows that we see on Earth. The students discussed the strengths and weaknesses of the model, how it led to a better understanding of moon phases, and how it could be improved. The Affirmative has the floor... 6th grade learned some fundamentals of debate protocol as we wrapped up our China unit. Students investigated and gathered evidence on the leadership of Emperor Qin. Was he a good leader? One side had to uphold the resolution and the other negate it; students practiced essential listening, note-taking, and speaking skills as they defended their claim. 7th graders applied their knowledge of finding the area of 2-D shapes to 3-D shapes! Each student brought a 3-D figure, like a cereal or Kleenex box, and deconstructed it to make a net. A net is the 2-D pattern of the 3-D figure. Then 7th graders measured the area of each of the faces to get the area and then added them all together to get the surface area! Check out all the hard work! Have you ever seen a rainbow or heard of ROYGBIV? Why do rainbows occur, and why do the colors appear in a certain order? 8th graders investigated light on the visible spectrum. They used a phosphorescent strip that is sensitive to high frequency waves to see which colors have higher frequencies. They found that blue and purple have high frequency. Up next - what does that mean about energy levels?! Now Freestyle! The 6th graders continued their dance class this week and were assigned a specific dance for the competition coming up. They danced away to the merengue while their instructor, Ms. Susana, determine which students shined the most in each dance. I think it is safe to say that the 6th graders are excited and ready for the competition! A night under the stars! The Junior High came back to the gym on Friday night to dance the night away! With pizza and an ice cream bar too, safe to say that everyone had a blast! Check out some of the pictures below! Looking Ahead...
3.28 // Spring Show 4.4 // 6th grade Dancing with Class Competition 4.12 // Talent Show 4.13 - 4.24 // Spring Break! As we study the leadership of Emperor Qin in Ancient China, 6th grade reflected on their own unique leadership qualities. "I am kind." "I am trustworthy!" "I am calm." "I am smart!" were some of their self-identified qualities. We then took a survey with different adjectives, which sorted them into Grapes, Oranges, Melons, or Bananas. We had a lot of "Oranges" in 6B. Oranges strengths are experimenting, being independent, and creating change! Do you or someone you know listen to really loud music in their headphones? Is it so loud you can hear it through their headphones?! Did you know this can cause damage to your ears?! 8th graders started their new unit on Waves. They figured out the relationship between sound intensity and decibel levels - an increase of 10 dB is a 10-fold increase in sound intensity! How intense. This week in religion 6th grade presented their research and communicated a Lenten tradition from around the world. We had Pancake Races from England, Candy Barrels from Denmark, and tibs from Ethiopia! The junior high has been working hard and having a lot of fun getting ready for the spring show! Our sports-themed show, "Get in the Game", will be presented at the Art ad Music Show on Thursday, March 28th at 6:30 P.M. Artwork will be on display from Kindergarten through eighth grade classes. This is a mandatory event for all students in the MYP Programme and fulfills a portion of the Performing Arts requirement. We can't wait to see you there! Fractions are a major part in the baking process. The 6th graders are wrapping up their fractions unit and decided to test their skills. Every student chose a recipe that they wanted to make and then converted the serving size and ingredients to make only a fraction of the original recipe. We had every kind of desert from cupcakes and cookies to donuts and fudge. These 6th graders were full by the time they left class! Look at all the hard work they put into their creations! Looking Ahead...
3.22 // SMS Dance (bring permission forms to the dance!) 3.28 // Spring Show 4.4 // 6th grade Dancing with Class Competition How do YOU say Paczki? For "Fat Tuesday" or Shrove Tuesday, 6th grade learned more about the beginning of Lent and how different countries around the world observe Lent. Paczki or "Pownch-Key," are a traditional food from Poland. This richer jelly donut is made with dough made from eggs, fat, yeast, and sugar and can contain a variety of fillings to truly indulge before fasting begins! Why do we have seasons? Is it hotter in the summer because we are closer to the sun? Ask any 6th grader and they'll say NO! 6th graders explored how the tilt of the earth leads to more or less direct sunlight - therefore resulting in the seasons. They tilted solar panels in various ways to see how it affected it's attached motor, which represented how earth's temperatures increase with more direct light. Can you write an equation for a line? What about using slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and standard form? 8th graders have been learning all about lines in our current unit and are now learning about how each of the equations are related. To practice, students participated in a card sort, that matched all the different forms for a line to their original graph. Many different strategies and strong communication were needed for this task! Dancing with class continued this week with the Paso Doble! Students were seen marching around the gym and even learned a new move called the “Scorpion” Ms. Wickert and Ms. Reckamp both made appearances and learned the moves as well! Keep up the hard work! 7th graders are learning about cells! They modeled a cell with a plastic bag and two solutions - one had cornstarch inside, the other had Lugols (an iodine solution). They found that only the Lugols solution was able to move in and out of the bag, causing a color change from yellow to purple. This is the idea of selective permeability - our cell membranes only allow certain substances in and out, which is important for our cells to maintain balance! Looking Ahead...
3.12 // Report Cards Go Home 3.22 // SMS Dance (bring permission forms to the dance!) 3.28 // Spring Show 4.4 // 6th grade Dancing with Class Competition 7th Grade kicked off a new "Money and Markets" unit this week with a hypothetical budgeting activity. With varying amounts for a monthly budget, students had to make decisions about how much they would/could spend in categories like housing, transportation, and entertainment. They were then asked to reflect on their choices and how they came to those decisions. Next we we take salary information we researched and turn it into our own budgets! Did you know that Florence Nightingale was one of the first people to discover that cleanliness was important for patient care in 1860? What about that 1890 was the first year that surgeons started using gloves during surgery?? 7th graders looked into the history of the Germ Theory of disease and took on the roles of the important scientists who contributed to our understanding of germs, microbes, and how to prevent the spread of disease. We have come so far in such a short amount of time - starting by simply washing our hands! L&L students in all grades played “vocabulary charades” during their vocabulary review session. 8th grade vocab words included extemporaneous, invincible, rugged, and aspire! Along with notorious, beneficiary, and dilapidated for the 6th graders. Can you guess which of the words these students were acting out? Looking Ahead... 3.1 // End of Trimester 2 3.3 // Confirmation Practice @ 4pm 3.4 // Mustang Market 3.4 // 8th Grade Confirmation 3.12 // Report Cards Go Home 3.28 // Spring Show |
