Did you know that on the south side of Chicago there are 64 acres of undeveloped land? 7th graders spent a couple weeks researching the area and highlighting some of the problems in Chicago that chould be fixed with the use of this land. Problems included the rising homelessness population and building a homeless shelter or low income housing or the necessity for healthy choices like city parks for families to enjoy or access to fresh vegetables. Then students wrote letters to the owner of the land explaining why there ideas for the land are the most important. Then they build scale models of their plans to show the owner how important their ideas are. Below are some pictures from our class gallery walk showing off all the hard work these 7th graders put into their projects! We're all told to wear sunscreen when it's sunny out....but what's the purpose? What does sunscreen even do? 8th graders designed and carried out their own experiments on whether sunscreen reflects or absorbs harmful UV rays. They used a UV indicator card to detect reflected UV rays and compared the results of a regular moisturizing lotion to SPF 30 sunscreen. If the UV card changed color, that indicated that the UV rays were reflected; if not, they must be absorbed. They will next work on analyzing their results! Santorini Anyone? 6th Grade has begun their exploration of Ancient Greece with reading about different aspects of culture-from theater, philosophy, and art to the very popular Gods and myths. They used these categories to begin investigating a research question they will formulate for their projects. 6th graders were very busy this week analyzing data. They focused on how the mean, median, mode, and range are impacted by just a few values. Students were given 12 bar charts and 12 tables and had to match them together based on the data. It proved to be no easy task as it took all four group members working together to complete the task in time. The Junior High ended the week with a talent show organized by student council! Chris, Frances, Hannah, and Lilly did a great job hosting the event as well as Lydia, Ethan, Mia, Kendall, Kael, and Xavier with the stage management! Shoutout to Noah as well for his help in organizing the event! From singing to dancing and jokes and piano, we saw it all! Way to be risk takers and preform JH students! We are so proud of you!
Looking Ahead...

How does simple inheritance occur? How do some people look like their grandparents or other relatives more than their parents or siblings? How do animals have offspring with different colorings or patterns than they have? 7th graders worked on looking at patterns of simple inheritance and how different gene combinations are possible, resulting in different traits. In Tech, MYP students designed a piece of Post-It art using Google Sheets, evaluated their results, voted on the best ones, and implemented their plans to create these pieces of art for classrooms. Which material is more reflective and which will absorb better? 8th graders investigated and gather proof for whether foil or a black cloth would reflect more UV light onto a UV sensing strip or absorb more IR waves, resulting in greater temperatures. Although it was pretty overcast, chilly, and windy, they did a great job following a procedure and collecting data! The 6th grade class wowed SMS parents, teachers, and staff with their amazing dancing skills on Thursday evening. The Dancing With Class program came to a close after 10 weeks and ended on a high note with a fantastic competition at DePaul College Prep. Each student showed courage and confidence while dancing and all were very excited (and a bit nervous) to participate! This was Dancing With Class's largest competition with 9 schools participating. St. Matthias took home the award for Runner-Up in Presentation! We are so very proud of all the students and their willingness to be open-minded risk-takers during this new experience. A very special thank you to our dance instructor Ms. Susanna for preparing the 6th grade class so well! Looking Ahead...
