6th grade took on the 100’s task this week to emulate what it looks like to work collaboratively with a group. This task required good communication, patience, and strategic planning for each group to be successful. While most groups started sitting casually in their seats during the task, as we went on they quickly realized that everyone has to participate and actively listen to get everything accomplished. Check out the major concentration below! Junior High Students are reading away in L&L! The 7th grade has been collaborating and analyzing the novel, The Witch of Blackbird Pond. Then in 6th grade, students are practicing the same skills with Wonder. The 7th graders continued to work on their team work in math class with a card game! The game 31-derful was a very frustrating game to start off until students perfected their communication strategies. The goal of the game is to create an array of 5 x 5 cards and have each row and column add up to 31. They were able to create three different correct combinations! Our first full week of the school year came to an end with the help of 8th graders at mass. These veteran mass planners showed the rest of the school how to put on a great mass. Thanks 8th grade! Tuesday marked the first day of the 2019-2020 school year. Everyone met on the playground for a blessing from Fr. Larry. It was great to see so many returning faces as well as some new ones! Mathematicians notice, describe, and generalize patterns. Our 8th grade mathematicians took on the challenge of Pascal’s triangle, a pyramid full of various patterns. They worked with their table partners to fill in all of the missing numbers. Once they completed the pyramid, we discussed all the skills that we need in order to be successful working in a group. This week in I&S, all JH students worked on their society projects. The assignment was to create a Utopian society with mixed cultures, races, religions, languages. Then they had to give it a name and make sure it includes components of an early civilizations such as bodies of water and mountains. This assignment was full of team work and cooperation. We love seeing the creativity emerge from every student! "Periodically, Ms. Olsen uses charts, diagrams, and tables to help your learning". Ms Olsen's 8th grade science students are in action, decoding the fourth clue for the first day of school "escape room" activity. Decoding the clues around the room required collaboration, communication, and critical thinking. Did you know that you can write an expression to equal all of the numbers 1-20 using Four 4’s? The 7th graders took on this task this week with their table groups. Everyone had to draw on all of their past knowledge including fractions, orders of operations, and exponents. They even talked about new operations such as square roots and factorials. We were able to figure out all of the numbers except for 11. If you can figure out how an expression that is equal to 11 that uses four 4’s, comment below for a ticket!
