3.16 // 8th Grade Confirmation
The 6th grade class is learning about Mesopotamia in Art with Mr. O. They were the first people to create a written language. In order to sign their documents they created a cylindrical seal. The Mesopotamians would roll that seal across documents as a way to sign their name. Students are learning the importance of their signature as a form of identification. This week students started a new unit in gym, floor hockey! Students worked on different drills such as passing, receiving, shooting, and stick handling. Students were able to gain control of the puck during these exercises. Excellent job! The 8th graders continued to update their stock portfolio this week when we inviters Mark from Charles Schwab back into the classroom. We took a look at our stocks: Visa, Home Depot, Microsoft, and Starbucks and decided to keep them all instead of trading. Then Mark talked to us a little bit about compound interest and how that can increase our return quicker than normal interest. We will check back next month, to see if keeping our stocks has paid off! We waltzed through another week of dancing with class? Ms. Susanna had the 6th graders holding a strong frame and moving around the gym. That means we now have 2 dances under our belt, the merengue and waltz. With 6 more weeks of classes, they have a lot of time to practice before their big competition. In the mean time, here’s a look into our practice. Looking Ahead...

In music class, students have been presenting their genre projects. Students enjoyed working individually or in pairs to research the origins of various genres of music from Grunge to Polka. They presented the findings to their class and even discussed what type of people would enjoy each genre. Our eyes (and ears) were opened to many new kinds of music! The 6th graders added a new dance to their repertoire this week thanks to Ms. Susana. From the party dance merengue to the dreamy waltz! Students were a little more hesitant to try this dance but we were open minded and took some risks and it turned out easier than they anticipated! We can’t wait to continue next week! Take a look inside L&L this week! The 6th graders were collaborating on finding themes for multi genre passages. There was a lot of clear communication needed to finish! Students practiced their jump rope skills in PE. Did you know that by jumping rope your body increases in overall muscle tone? Your quadriceps, hamstrings, and deltoids all become stronger. Way to go junior high! Shoutout to the 7th/8th grade girls basketball team this season! Congratulations on being a part of the Jr. NBA All Star Invitational! All of you worked very hard and put in a lot of effort this season! Go Mustangs! Looking Ahead...
2.17 // President’s Day - No School! 2.20 // Hot Dog Day - Wear your spirit wear! 2.26 // Ash Wednesday Our 8th graders are in the midst of their algebra unit on equations for lines. They took some time this week to use their knowledge of lines to create their version of a stained glass window. Students graphed 15 lines on a single axis using slope and y intercept. Once they graphed their lines, they colored in the new shapes to highlight their lines. Some students even chose to graph logos or pictures. On Friday, we all got together to have a gallery walk to view what all of our classmates were working on. Look at our final products! This week students demonstrated two different movement patterns using an elastic band in PE. This elastic band was used for Chinese jump rope. Chinese jump rope originated in China during the 7th century. This game resembles a form of hopscotch and jump rope. The students memory and coordination was on point! Awesome job! Dancing with class continued this week! Our 6th graders perfected their Merengue steps and were able to complete a full routine! Watch out for next week for a new dance! Looking Ahead...
2.14 // Valentine’s Day 2.17 // President’s Day - No School! 2.20 // Hot Dog Day - Wear your spirit wear! Catholic schools week kicked off with student appreciation day on Monday! To celebrate students were treated with no homework, a movie day, and a yoga class! We have the best students in Junior High. We love and appreciate all of you! Earlier this month in PE students have been focusing on improving their balance, stability, and core strength. During our warm up, students used paper plates as a form of gliders. Students have been engaging their muscles during exercises such as lateral lunges, push ups, knee tucks, plank jacks, and sit-ups with an ab twist. Great effort junior high! The 8th grade is working on creating a product and designing the packaging for one of the seven deadly sins. In designing of the cover they will need to make their box enticing so that it grabs the attention of their target audience. They need to decide on what Advertising Strategy they want to use: Legos, Pathos, or Ethos. On the front of the box they will also create a focal point using one or more of the techniques for placing emphasis on a key image. Their package will need to clearly represent and sell their product. Students modeled the function of the alveoli in a fun science experiment. The Alveoli determines which molecules are Carbon Dioxide, and which are Oxygen, putting each in the correct place. Students used BTB chemical indicators to exemplify the different chemical reactions liquids have to CO2 and O2. In L&L the 8th graders are currently reading the classic, Lord of the Flies! This week they were investigating characters from the the book by putting them on trial for their crimes. Dancing with Class kicked off this week for our 6th graders! We are happy to welcome back Ms. Susanna for the next few weeks to teach us all the joys of dancing! Our students were a little nervous to start out but those nerve were quickly put to rest as we started learning the party dance from the Dominican Republic, Merengue! We ended Catholic Schools Week with our Fun Run! Students have been working hard to raise money for our school to purchase lockers for the Junior High and update our main campus bathrooms. Each student gained pledges for every lap they ran around our school gym so that we could meet our goal and it was great! They turned off the lights and played some music while we ran and ran! we are so happy to announce that we met and surpassed our goal! As a reward, students earned a teacher pie in the face and Ms. Olsen took one for the team! Thank you to everyone who pledged or spread the word. We couldn’t have done it without you! Looking Ahead...
