Ms. Kanaley's junior high students have been dedicated to completing their Cascarones! We began by hollowing out the eggs, washing them, and letting them dry overnight. Meanwhile, we made confetti to fill the completed Cascarones! Finally, we colored and dyed the eggs. Watch out, the finished products will be cracked over the heads of loved ones to bring good luck!
In Language and Literature, seventh grade continued their study of perspective by looking at a series of arguments from both sides. Students were given questions such as "Should student placement in their school classes be based on student achievement instead of age?" They then listed pros and cons for the argument. This is our introduction into examining the differences between an argument with which you agree and a logical, sound argument.
After playing the Circulation Game to model the cardiovascular system, seventh grade got an up-close look at the heart of the system... by dissecting a sheep heart! They were surprised to see how muscular the heart is, and they proved themselves very mature with their careful handling of scalpels!
The St. Matthias entrepreneur team took a trip to the International Housewares Convention last weekend. Even though we had to wake up early on a Saturday morning, the trip immediately got off to an exciting start... a ride in a limo! Little did we know that our 10-passenger van would turn out to be a limousine. Once there, the students got to meet a wide range of inventors and entrepreneurs, including Shark Tank participants and Marc Portney from All-American Makers. It was a trip to remember!
The sixth grade students put on their blue suede shoes on Thursday night, participating in the 2017 Dance Off with Dancing with Class. Their two months of hard work and practice paid off! The St. Matthias students won the Overall Presentation award (for the BEST spirit) and were named the winners of the 2017 Dance Off!
Additionally, our students won the following awards for their partner dances:
Individual Dance - Merengue: Manny and Mari, Morgan and Casey
Individual Dance - Foxtrot: Lydia and Hunter
Individual Dance - Swing: Morgan and Ethan
Individual Dance - Pasa Doble: Lydia and Tyler, Madeleine and Eoin
Due to the unexpected warm weather on Friday, our eighth grade students spent part of the morning playing outside with students from preschool and kindergarten. From basketball (duh!) and soccer to keep away -- these kids were busy!
To cap off a successful week, the St. Matthias students in grades 2-8 participated in the Talent Show. We had tap dancers, singers, and comedians -- oh my! Many thanks to Ms. Nolan and the Student Council crew for putting on an excellent show!
-St. Matthias school and the Dank Haus campus will be closed for spring break from Saturday, March 25 to Sunday, April 2.
