One under par... The newest sports learned and played in junior high P.E. have been: eighth grade with golf (it felt like we took a field trip to a miniature golf course!), seventh grade with ladder toss, and sixth grade with shuffleboard. Talk about being "open-minded" and creative! King for the day... Seventh grade spent Tuesday morning with their Kindergarten buddies in Mrs. Pacholski's class. They learned about the tradition of Mardi Gras and decorated masks to celebrate the occasion. Then, to make the most of Fat Tuesday, they shared some king cake. Lucy in Kindergarten and Adan in seventh grade were awarded the baby from the king cake because they were such amazing helpers! Confirmandi lead the way... After celebrating Ash Wednesday Mass together, the eighth graders spent time with their PreK buddies. They read stories, played with toys, and drew Lenten crosses. It is so wonderful to spend time having fun with our buddies, but it is an extra special treat to act as their role models in faith. Gone with the wind... Sixth grade took their anemometers and wind vanes out for testing on Monday. Although it was a nice warm day for being outside, the wind was not very strong. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as groups were motivated to improve their design even more to be able to catch the smallest breeze. They have what it takes for engineering! Science digest... Seventh grade designed their own experiments to explore the effects of mechanical digestion on chemical digestion. Some used materials to model digestion, but others went for the real thing and used mints and saliva! Dancing the morning away... Sixth grade continued their dance unit by learning how to swing dance! Our dancers got to be much wilder and more spirited with this one. I Wonder who... In Language Arts, sixth grade reflected on their Wonder unit by playing a "Guess Who" Interview game. Students answered creative interview questions posing as one of the characters from the novel, and their partners had to guess who they were portraying. Out of this world... Several of our sixth and seventh graders have been selected to participate in Big Shoulders' Brush Creek Ranch program. This program involves science enrichment sessions throughout the spring semester, and it culminates in a week-long trip to Staddle Camp Wyoming in the summer. Last Saturday was their first enrichment session, and they got to participate in Mars-di-Gras activities at the Adler Planetarium, see a Skywatch Live! show, and work with a NASA employee to build a "robotic" arm. They represented St. Matthias very well! Looking ahead... -Eighth grade Confirmation is at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, March 7. Join us to celebrate the newest adult members of our church! -Report cards go home on Friday, March 10. They are due back signed on Friday, March 17. Happy weekend!
