8th graders have been sharpening their skills with graphing lines in slope-intercept form. They made “stained glass windows” by writing equations, graphing them with the slope and y intercept, then coloring in the cross sections to imitate a stained glass window. On Thursday, they participated in a gallery walk to see all of their classmates projects. They even left positive comments about each of the final drafts. Look at how cool they turned out! 7th Grade Activists: As a final summative project for their Illinois Government Unit, 7th grade investigated an issue affecting Illinois. They then drafted letters to a state or local legislator. Research topics ranged from the plastic bag tax to gun violence. These student letters featured ideas on plastic straws, the state budget, and homelessness.
The 7th grade class was working on creating Cell Phone Covers. This project was inspired Georges Seurat’s fascination with the scientific and technological advances of his time. He incorporated the theory of Optical Blending into his new painting style called Pointillism. This style explores the different Properties of Color: Hue, Value, and Intensity. By using small dots of color, Students are able to create a gradation of color and value. This subtle change of color gives the image depth and form. Addition, these small dots of true colors keep the colors bright and vibrant. Mixing colors by Layering would make them darker and less clear. Something you never want your Cell Phones to be. Also, Thank you to Heather and Hannah for taking pictures! The 6th graders continued to dance this week and added swing dancing to their repertoire! That makes 3 dances that they are mastering. We love to see how enthusiastic and dedicated they are to learning these dance moves. Students are already talking about their final competition, we can’t wait to show off our moves! Students in 7th grade are planning a trip to a Spanish speaking country. They have $3000 and four days in their budget. They are looking up and researching about the country and places to visit. They're very into it! The Art of Marketing: 8th graders are creating package designs to learn how we as consumers can be persuaded and enticed into purchase a product. They learned the Persuasive Advertising Strategies of Logos, Ethos, and Pathos, which are used to sell a product. In addition they learned the Principle of Design Emphasis. With this they see how visual techniques are used to capture and focus our attention on a product. These techniques subconsciously draws us in and engage our interest. Looking Ahead...

6th grade wrapped up their most recent unit by becoming playwrights! Students interpreted information from the stories of Juan Diego or the Battle of Jericho. They then wrote plays in three acts, with an exposition, climax, and denouement. They came up with the ideas for props, blocking, and performed them in front their class this week! 7th grade reviewed their knowledge of percents this week with a scavenger hunt around the classroom. From tax to commission and discounts and percents change, students worked together to solve various problems that reviewed some key concepts we have discussed. The 6th graders are loving "Dancing With Class"! This week, they learned their second dance style... the Fox Trot! Ms. Susanna, their instructor is very impressed with how fast the class is learning these styles and their overall enthusiasm for ballroom dance. The program runs for 10 weeks and culminates in a Competition on April 4th at DePaul College Prep High School. More details to follow in the coming weeks!
6th graders demonstrated what they know about changing states of water by creating concept maps. While they have been exposed to this material in the past, they were challenged to come up with concepts make connections between them before we use this information to further investigate the water cycle's role in our weather and atmosphere. Even though they all had the same task, each group created a different concept map. Way to work together and think outside of the box! How did the people of ancient Mesopotamia sign a document? Most of the people at that time were illiterate. What they did was create a personalized symbol Anna cylindrical seal, which they roll onto clay to leave their mark. The sixth grade class has been designing their own personal symbol to impress into polymer clay to create their own identification seal. The junior high is in the early stages of preparing for the spring show. This week, we discussed how the performing arts enable us to become more confident public speakers. The students participated in several improvisation activities to build courage and confidence. The 6th graders in these photos are participating in a mirroring skill where one student leads the movements and the other follows. The students created fluid movements using not only their arms and legs, but also their faces, accompanied by music. The annual art and music show will be Thursday, March 28th at 6:30 p.m. in the St. Matthias Gym.

2.18 // No School ~ President’s Day 2.24 // Pancake Breakfast 3.1 // End of Trimester 2 3.4 // 8th Grade Confirmation 3.28 // Spring Show 6th graders went live reporting major weather events as they occurred in history. We learned all about blizzards, typhoons, hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, and more! They reported on how and why the weather event occurred, the damage it caused, and any lasting problems it left behind. They did a great job! Proportions and percents practice! 7th graders presented their discoveries about how discount, tax, and shipping fees can impact the price of an object. Then we moved to thinking about percent change. Check out some of the posters below that are filled with mathematical proportions! Let’s celebrate! These 7th graders combined their tickets, that they earned from their positive behavior, to get the pizza party reward! Congratulations and thank you for all the great things you do in our school! Looking Ahead...
2.15 // Resurrection High School Women’s Math Olympics 2.18 // No School ~ President’s Day This week started with Student Appreciation Day! Following lunch, our Junior High students were able to spend some time in open gym, playing games, eating some treats, and watching movies! Thanks for all of your continued hard work Junior High! ~Comment below your favorite thing about being a student at St. Matthias for a ticket~ 7th graders got some extra exercise in science this week! They figured out their resting heart rate by checking their pulse, then worked out in various ways, and measured their recovery pulse. What a great way to measure their fitness! 7th graders applied their knowledge of percents by exploring how discounts, tax, and shipping fees impact the price of an item. In this problem, they were trying to find the store that had the lowest price for the bike that we wanted. Students made predictions before their calculations and were very surprised as to how much these different percents impact the final price! We ended the week with our Boosterthon Fun Run! After a week of pledging, we all ran over 35 laps to fulfill all our pledges and WE MET OUR GOAL! To celebrate making our goal, Principal Carden was duct taped to the flag pole following church and we got to pie a GI Jen in the face! Thank you to everyone who made a pledge, we cannot wait to get new chrome books and paint our gym! Looking Ahead...
