8th grade students built simple electric motors with a wire coil, magnets, and batteries. They investigated some of the factors that caused it to spin and underwent lots of trial and error! They also used a motor as a generator to light a light emitting diode, or an LED light. Check out the video too! 6th grade started our new fraction unit this week! Students used fraction tiles to explore how to find equivalent fractions. Most students started by organizing all the pieces and then took them apart piece by piece to combine potential equivalent fractions. Practicing our basketball dribbling in gym this week! 6th grade participated in some relay races dribbling back and forth across the gym. Speaking of basketball, all of our St. Matthias teams are back on the court! Check them out this season! Looking Ahead...

In L&L, the 7th graders finished their public speaking unit creating commercials and presenting them “live.” Students proved they were effective speakers by knowing their subject matter and their audience by using the rhetorical appeals of ethos, logos, and pathos. The middle school students have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming annual Christmas Pageant. They are all learning the music and have been designing costumes and creating backstories for their favorite characters in the show. The Christmas Pageant is a mandatory performance requirement for the middle school. This year the Pageant is Sunday, December 16th at 1:30 P.M. in the church. 7th graders investigated the role of variation in natural selection! They posed as a species of birds called "Forkbirds" that had different variations of "beaks" (forks with either 1, 2, or 4 tines) that collected "wild loops" as food. They learned that the birds with 4-tined beaks survived the longest and collected the most food, therefore allowing them to live longer and reproduce more, as compared to the 1-tined forkbirds that struggled to collect food and live to reproduce In L&L, the 8th graders finished their Life of Pi novel unit by creating a soundtrack for the novel. Each student found three songs, annotated the lyrics for connections to the novel, wrote an analysis paragraph for each song, and presented one song with connections to the class! The Constitution has many parts The Preamble is where it starts! Articles go from One to Seven And the Amendments we take as a given! 7th Grade is beginning their government unit as they prepare to take the Constitution test this year as well. To understand the document, it's important to know its anatomy-how it's put together. So 7th grade are taking their rhyming skills to the next level with raps about the parts of the Constitution. Students are even using beat-generating programs to give them an authentic song feel! The entire JH went to Feed My Starving Children on Tuesday to pack meals to send to places in need. Those places included Kenya, Cambodia, Philippines, Djibouti and many more! We were able to pack 191 boxes with the help of your students, staff, and parent volunteers. Thanks to all who participated in our day of service!

Students worked in partners to write equations, that when solved, the variable is equal to that day of the week. Each group had a different month and a theme that went along with it. The calendars will be displayed in Ms. Lyne's room and changed every month. Check them out!
What’s the relationship between gravitational potential energy and kinetic energy? Ask an 8th grader! They designed experiments to determine how mass and height affect energy transfer by dropping metal rods of different sizes to drive a nail into a styrofoam block. They worked together to develop hypotheses, wrote their own procedures, carried them out, and analyzed their results. It was a great way to dive right into their energy unit! Constitution Scavenger Hunt Winners 2018 With the Constitution test rapidly approaching, students completed a "Scavenger Hunt" with clues around the school they had to solve and then decode to get to the next location. To win, they had to complete a sort of the 27 Amendments. How many Amendments could YOU name??? Last SUnday, November 3rd, the eighth grade class hosted a delicious pasta dinner to fundraise for their washington d.c. trip. It was a wonderful night of food, friends, and great conversation! a special thanks to all of the eighth grade parents who donated food items and their time to help this event go smoothly. And an extra special thanks to all who helped prepare the food. We thank all who came to help make this a successful fundraiser and hope that this is the start of a new st. matthias tradition!Looking Ahead...

With the help of the French, the acumen of George Washington, the amount of territory Britain had to control. 6th graders tried to identify different rock types - igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary - in order to determine if they possibly had a diamond in their midst! Diamonds are typically found in specific igneous rocks. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any diamonds, but they did use their strong investigative skills to figure it out. 7th graders began their unit on Evolution! They observed 8 different fossils and made inferences on what the species may have been, where it might have been from, and how it could be related to other more familiar organisms. 6A met with their Prayer Partner class today to complete a special Día de Muertos craft. Students chatted and helped make amazing stained glass skulls. Thanks for warm welcome Kindergarteners! The 7th graders finished up their “How To” speeches in L&L. Some of the creative things they taught their peers were how to play the ukulele, ride a skateboard, take care of a pet, make an omelet, and tie-dye a t-shirt. HAppy Halloween!
