Identity and the self-portrait; This trimester in Art we're developing our drawing skills by tackling the self-portrait. Today we learning about Andrew Looms' technique for plotting out the proportions of the human face. ln one of these pictures you can see Mr. O. Demonstrating how the measurement from your the bridge of your nose to the top of your head is the same as measuring down from the bridge of your nose to your chin. So one can actually locate the eyes in the center of your face. It is fun, looking out into the class and see everyone thumb and forefinger extended over their forehead. The 8th graders have an awesome opportunity to learn about math within real world situations through the Big Shoulder’s Stock Market program. This week we welcomed Noelle from Charles Schwab to talk with us about different ways to save money. Shen explained how investing in the stock market can make us more money and quicker compared to a savings account with lower interest rates. Next time we meet, we will choose 3-5 stocks to buy and hopefully make a profit by the end of the year! This week we started a football unit. Student’s practiced throwing and catching a football. Nice spirals everyone! How do we create an image so that it looks heroic? 7th grade students looked at Neoclassical Art to identify some of the technique that artist used to create strong dramatic and heroic pictures. They are using this information to create a work of art that illustrates a social value in a heroic way. In I&S, the 8th graders have been catching up on their current events. In particular, they have been researching all of the presidential candidates and their stances on education and how each plan could affect their daily lives. After their research, students had a discussion to compare and contrast viewpoints. Looking Ahead...

In I&S the 6th graders are learning about Ancient Mesopotamia. This week they practiced writing their names in cuneiform on clay tablets and reeds. Cuneiform is one of the earliest systems of writing and our students loved this hands on activity! Special thanks to Mr. O for the supplies too! The 6th and 7th graders presented their Radio Broadcasts In music class over the last couple weeks. The decades that were presented were from the 1940’s to the 100’s. Each group researched and combined relevant music from their decade with important news and weather events. Some groups even researched popular products from their decade and made up commercials as part of their broadcast! Not only did they learn about the most famous musicians/performers of these decades, they also learned a lot about the people and major historical events that impacted our world. We may have some budding radio DJ’s or news reporters on our hands! October is the month of the rosary! 7B created a life-size rosary this week and displayed it along side images of the mysteries of the rosary. It is being displayed in the front hallway of the main campus. If you have a minute, stop by and take a look at all of their hard work! A decimal pumpkin patch! 6th graders reviewed decimal orders of operations this week with pumpkin task cards! Once they solved the problem using PEMDAS correctly, they had to match it to the correct answer. They worked hard and collaboratively as a group in order to successfully complete the task. These brave, and intelligent middle schoolers put their knowledge to the test in DePaul College Prep’s annual academic quizbowl. In teams of four, these students raced against other middle school students to answer science, math, history, literature, and biblical trivia. (Not pictures Paige Mankowski and Ms. Olsen). They learned a lot and are looking forward to participating in the next quizbowl! The eighth graders took a trip to the UIC arena on Friday to experience Holy Fire, an Archdiocesan sponsored event for 6-8 graders to promote encounters with Jesus Christ. The students listened to high energy musicians, inspirational speakers deliver messages of hope, and celebrated Mass with Cardinal Cupich. It was a great day for our soon-to-be-confirmed eighth graders to grow in their faith and their relationship with God. On Thursday, the entire SMS community held a pep rally in the gym for our students who qualified for the state tournament in cross country! Congrats to 6th graders Alexandra Jones and Annika Swan and 8th graders Lilly Buchanan and Christian Lanz who will be running this weekend! Good luck to all! The exciting life of a junior high student! Here are a few of our favorite pictures from the students this week. From matching jackets to meeting up with our siblings at recess. There is never a dull moment! Looking Ahead...
10.31 // Halloween Day! This year, the Junior High created the Student Voice Committee with the help of Ms. Olsen and Ms. Hawkins. The JH held elections and voted on the representatives they believed will represent their ideas and voices within St. Matthias. We had a multitude of students take the risk and run for a position. They wrote and gave very impassioned speeches and spoke about topics that were very important to all. Here are the results of the very close race! This week the students continued to focus on their Track and Field Unit. They used all of their energy for long jumps, underhand, and overhand throwing. Check out these awesome action pics! Ms. Hawkins’ religion class went outside this week to make rosaries! They all started with a string and beads and threaded them to represent the three mysteries of the life of Jesus. It was an awesome introduction to their religion unit and students will be able to use the rosaries all year long! The eighth graders have been learning about the history of protest songs and how they were and are still used to create and promote change. The class was tasked with writing their own protest songs in groups and performing them The themes of their songs focused on gun violence, vaping, and bullying. They did an amazing job writing the lyrics and setting instruments to their meaningful melodies. Amazing job eighth graders! This week in L&L the 7th graders presented their Creative Colony projects. The projects included a name of the colony, the structure, rules, different holidays they celebrate, and what everyday life is like. Look at all the creativity in theses new colonies below! The 8th graders reviewed solving multi step equations this week prior to their test. In a crowd favorite review game, everyone participated in a couple rounds of Quizlet Live! All students had to communicate and work together to solve every problem. Great perseverance and team work! Preparing for the Circus Ring! On Circus day, students spent the day trying out all 10 of the circus acts! From jump ropes and stilts to trapeze and mini bikes, everyone was able to try out each new skill. Once they tried all the skills, they selected one to focus on and create an act around it! They spent an hour creating an act then got costumes and make up! Here are some behind the scenes pictures. Special shout out to Ms. Salawu who showed off her excellent Double Dutch skills! Let the Circus begin! All students preformed their acts in front of the entire school and parents! The 8th graders did a fantastic job of helping out in every aspect of the day! From leading groups throughout the day to hosting the circus day! Special thanks to Ava, Kelsey, and Yahir for introducing the acts! You all were fantastic risk takers and leaders, awesome job! A big shout out to all the students who participated in this memorable day! Looking Ahead...
10.11-10.14 // Fall Break, No School! 10.15 // Picture Day 10.17 // Hot Dog Day 10.18 // 8th Grade ‘Holy Fire’ Field Trip Hamilton and Jefferson debate on the following key issues agriculture, immigration, power distribution with the Constitution and slavery. Hamilton won the debate. Great job! Kael was Hamilton and Jessica was Jefferson. This week we started a Track and Field sports unit. We focused on relay races and hurdles. Middle school showed their determination and effort during these two events! The 6th graders are working on explaining and showing their work in Math. While practicing their decimal operations, students were risk takers and communicators when they came up to the board to solve problems. This week in I&S we welcomed a guest into our classroom! The 7th and 8th graders were able to listen to Father Charles Dahm from Pilsen who spoke about immigration. He has focused on primarily Mexican Immigrant rights his entire career and is an advocate for immigration rights. Later, the 6th graders watched a CNN 10 video and discussed similar issues. Thanks for stopping by Father Dahm! In science this week the 8th graders learned about density in their “rainbow lab”. The students got to do this lab for averaging a 5 on their quiz. Way to go! Looking Ahead...
