10.31 // Halloween Day!
In I&S the 6th graders are learning about Ancient Mesopotamia. This week they practiced writing their names in cuneiform on clay tablets and reeds. Cuneiform is one of the earliest systems of writing and our students loved this hands on activity! Special thanks to Mr. O for the supplies too! The 6th and 7th graders presented their Radio Broadcasts In music class over the last couple weeks. The decades that were presented were from the 1940’s to the 100’s. Each group researched and combined relevant music from their decade with important news and weather events. Some groups even researched popular products from their decade and made up commercials as part of their broadcast! Not only did they learn about the most famous musicians/performers of these decades, they also learned a lot about the people and major historical events that impacted our world. We may have some budding radio DJ’s or news reporters on our hands! October is the month of the rosary! 7B created a life-size rosary this week and displayed it along side images of the mysteries of the rosary. It is being displayed in the front hallway of the main campus. If you have a minute, stop by and take a look at all of their hard work! A decimal pumpkin patch! 6th graders reviewed decimal orders of operations this week with pumpkin task cards! Once they solved the problem using PEMDAS correctly, they had to match it to the correct answer. They worked hard and collaboratively as a group in order to successfully complete the task. These brave, and intelligent middle schoolers put their knowledge to the test in DePaul College Prep’s annual academic quizbowl. In teams of four, these students raced against other middle school students to answer science, math, history, literature, and biblical trivia. (Not pictures Paige Mankowski and Ms. Olsen). They learned a lot and are looking forward to participating in the next quizbowl! The eighth graders took a trip to the UIC arena on Friday to experience Holy Fire, an Archdiocesan sponsored event for 6-8 graders to promote encounters with Jesus Christ. The students listened to high energy musicians, inspirational speakers deliver messages of hope, and celebrated Mass with Cardinal Cupich. It was a great day for our soon-to-be-confirmed eighth graders to grow in their faith and their relationship with God. On Thursday, the entire SMS community held a pep rally in the gym for our students who qualified for the state tournament in cross country! Congrats to 6th graders Alexandra Jones and Annika Swan and 8th graders Lilly Buchanan and Christian Lanz who will be running this weekend! Good luck to all! The exciting life of a junior high student! Here are a few of our favorite pictures from the students this week. From matching jackets to meeting up with our siblings at recess. There is never a dull moment! Looking Ahead...
