Identity and the self-portrait; This trimester in Art we're developing our drawing skills by tackling the self-portrait. Today we learning about Andrew Looms' technique for plotting out the proportions of the human face. ln one of these pictures you can see Mr. O. Demonstrating how the measurement from your the bridge of your nose to the top of your head is the same as measuring down from the bridge of your nose to your chin. So one can actually locate the eyes in the center of your face. It is fun, looking out into the class and see everyone thumb and forefinger extended over their forehead. The 8th graders have an awesome opportunity to learn about math within real world situations through the Big Shoulder’s Stock Market program. This week we welcomed Noelle from Charles Schwab to talk with us about different ways to save money. Shen explained how investing in the stock market can make us more money and quicker compared to a savings account with lower interest rates. Next time we meet, we will choose 3-5 stocks to buy and hopefully make a profit by the end of the year! This week we started a football unit. Student’s practiced throwing and catching a football. Nice spirals everyone! How do we create an image so that it looks heroic? 7th grade students looked at Neoclassical Art to identify some of the technique that artist used to create strong dramatic and heroic pictures. They are using this information to create a work of art that illustrates a social value in a heroic way. In I&S, the 8th graders have been catching up on their current events. In particular, they have been researching all of the presidential candidates and their stances on education and how each plan could affect their daily lives. After their research, students had a discussion to compare and contrast viewpoints. Looking Ahead...
