How does simple inheritance occur? How do some people look like their grandparents or other relatives more than their parents or siblings? How do animals have offspring with different colorings or patterns than they have? 7th graders worked on looking at patterns of simple inheritance and how different gene combinations are possible, resulting in different traits. In Tech, MYP students designed a piece of Post-It art using Google Sheets, evaluated their results, voted on the best ones, and implemented their plans to create these pieces of art for classrooms. Which material is more reflective and which will absorb better? 8th graders investigated and gather proof for whether foil or a black cloth would reflect more UV light onto a UV sensing strip or absorb more IR waves, resulting in greater temperatures. Although it was pretty overcast, chilly, and windy, they did a great job following a procedure and collecting data! The 6th grade class wowed SMS parents, teachers, and staff with their amazing dancing skills on Thursday evening. The Dancing With Class program came to a close after 10 weeks and ended on a high note with a fantastic competition at DePaul College Prep. Each student showed courage and confidence while dancing and all were very excited (and a bit nervous) to participate! This was Dancing With Class's largest competition with 9 schools participating. St. Matthias took home the award for Runner-Up in Presentation! We are so very proud of all the students and their willingness to be open-minded risk-takers during this new experience. A very special thank you to our dance instructor Ms. Susanna for preparing the 6th grade class so well! Looking Ahead...
