How do YOU say Paczki? For "Fat Tuesday" or Shrove Tuesday, 6th grade learned more about the beginning of Lent and how different countries around the world observe Lent. Paczki or "Pownch-Key," are a traditional food from Poland. This richer jelly donut is made with dough made from eggs, fat, yeast, and sugar and can contain a variety of fillings to truly indulge before fasting begins! Why do we have seasons? Is it hotter in the summer because we are closer to the sun? Ask any 6th grader and they'll say NO! 6th graders explored how the tilt of the earth leads to more or less direct sunlight - therefore resulting in the seasons. They tilted solar panels in various ways to see how it affected it's attached motor, which represented how earth's temperatures increase with more direct light. Can you write an equation for a line? What about using slope-intercept form, point-slope form, and standard form? 8th graders have been learning all about lines in our current unit and are now learning about how each of the equations are related. To practice, students participated in a card sort, that matched all the different forms for a line to their original graph. Many different strategies and strong communication were needed for this task! Dancing with class continued this week with the Paso Doble! Students were seen marching around the gym and even learned a new move called the “Scorpion” Ms. Wickert and Ms. Reckamp both made appearances and learned the moves as well! Keep up the hard work! 7th graders are learning about cells! They modeled a cell with a plastic bag and two solutions - one had cornstarch inside, the other had Lugols (an iodine solution). They found that only the Lugols solution was able to move in and out of the bag, causing a color change from yellow to purple. This is the idea of selective permeability - our cell membranes only allow certain substances in and out, which is important for our cells to maintain balance! Looking Ahead...
