On Halloween, sixth grade listened to a recording of Edgar Allan Poe’s "The Tell-tale Heart” after answering a spooky survey about madness! They also learned a little bit about Poe’s dark legacy in American literature. The halls have looked a little strange lately at SMS junior high. No, our seventh graders are not talking to walls because they have gone mad; they are trying to memorize their original speeches for their public speaking unit! Students have been working hard to compose and prepare original speeches that they will present next week! 6th graders are finishing up a unit on the erosion and deposition. They are using their knowledge of weathering processes to determine the best location for the fictional town of Boomtown to build its new development. The choices are Delta Marsh, Green Hill, or the Seaside Cliff. Students worked together and presented the pros and cons of each site based on evidence they’ve collected through the unit. To celebrate El Día de Los Muertos (November 1&2), 7&8 grade MYP Spanish students finished up their sugar skulls and held a gallery on Wednesday during lunch. The winners were skulls that the audience (all middle school students & teachers) felt most authentically represented the holiday. The students did an excellent job with this summative assessment; already looking forward to next year!
