6th graders in Earth Science learned about various earth phenomenons. phenomenon are unusual, observable occurrences in our world. They studied why their chosen phenomenon occurs, and created interactive museum exhibits, modeling the phenomenon. 7th graders and 8th graders observed and learned about glowing lakes in caves, lenticular clouds, phases of the moon, and the beautiful Aurora Borealis among other phenomenon. Students in Ms. Olsen’s 7th grade life science class participated in a balloon debate. Each 7th graders chose a biologist or geologist to embody in a debate. They were put in a “hot air balloon” with 3-4 other scientists. They had to convince the class why their scientist made the biggest impact to our lives, and therefore should not get thrown out of the hot air balloon. Scientists were slowly voted out until we had one winner in each hot air balloon. Our winners included Francis Crick, Galelieo, and Sylvia Earle. Students learned about traditional holiday games this week leading up to Christmas break. In particular, students played dreidel and talked about other traditions in Judaism. AS you can see, it was definitely a fun afternoon for all! In math this week students decorated gingerbread cookies. Each of the decorations cost a certain amount of money and at the end, students added up their totals to see which gingerbread cookie cost the most (and the least) to decorate! We also had a contest for the best outfit, most festive, funniest, most colorful, and most creative. Special shoutout to Hannah who won most creative for her gingerbread cookie of Ms. Lyne! Great job to all, look how good they turned out! This week in PE, we worked on three Components of Fitness. These three include cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. We worked on the Pacer test which is a measurement of aerobic fitness through running, curl ups which measures the endurance of the abdominal muscles, and push ups which measures upper body strength. Everyone worked really hard! We even had time to end with a Tic- Tac- Toe game! Excellent job! Wrapping Extravaganza! In the gym this week SMS opened their store of gently used items to the Pk-3rd grade students to buy and wrap gifts for their families. The junior high was there to assist them in finding the best gifts and wrapping them! Each student was partnered with a younger student to walk around the store and find the perfect gift. Some even had the opportunity to go around shopping with their siblings. Shoutout to Gavin who was paired up with Clara and helped her pick out a present for her dad, Mr. Howell! We love seeing our entire school interact and work together to help each other! It’s our 3rd annual gingerbread house making contest! Students in our junior high worked together to create some festive structures out of graham crackers, frosting, and of course candy! With Christmas music playing in the background, students were planning and communicating with each other to build these structures. In our contest, we had 3 categories, Most Festive, Best Architecture, and Best Overall. Let’s just say these students did not disappoint! Here are the results! Thank you to all our students for such a fun morning and for the parents who brought in and donated these materials. We couldn’t have done it without you, Thank you so much!
