The seventh grade students got their hearts racing in math class. They compared their resting heart rates to their exercising heart rates and used proportions to extrapolate. Try it at home by counting how many times your heart beats in ten seconds. Can you convert it to beats per minute?
The sixth grade students took a much needed brain break in I&S to play an ancient Egyptian board game called senet. Archaeologists unearthed four senet boards within the tomb of the famed King Tut, but have yet to determine how to play the game. Although the exact rules remain unknown, we still had a good time trying out various methods!
This week, the seventh grade students donned their tricorn hats and participated in an in-class simulation about the escalating tensions between England and its colonies. Four teams vied for votes as they presented their options to a panel of concerned colonists. Despite their knowledge of what REALLY happened in colonial America, our students decided to pursue non-violent means to solve the issue of taxation without representation.
Today in eighth grade, students added kinetic energy to a system of copper shot in a plastic container. Next week they will analyze their data to determine the energy transformations that took place and explore the scientific meanings of temperature, heat, and thermal energy. They were surprised by how much of their energy it took to shake the pellet for 30 seconds!
