Math in Art! 6th graders explored equivalent fractions and decimals this week with 100 squares. Students colored in all 100 squares and then wrote the fraction of each color in their picture. For example, if you colored in 8 squares blue that fraction is 2/25! Then can you determine the equivalent decimal? Ask the 6th graders! Has your coffee ever cooled down and you needed to top it off with hot coffee to heat it back up? Ever wondered how much you need to add? 8th graders investigated energy transfer by conduction by mixing together hot and cold water. They found that heat is transferred from hot to cold and that things that two objects with the same temperature can have different amounts of energy based on their volume. They also found that the final temperature of the mixture was closest to the temperature of liquid with more volume. Very cool/lacking thermal energy! Inequalities can be represented in many different ways! 8th grade spent the day reviewing with problems that had 3 different stages. First, students had to solve the problem and match the correct solution. Second, they had to determine which graph represented their answer. Third, students determined which interval notation represented their original problem. Looking Ahead...
