Who you callin' a dummy? Eighth grade spent the week designing crash test dummies for vehicle safety. They planned where the sensors would go, what the sensors would measure, and of what materials the dummies would be made. Force and motion come to life! Yeast are beast... What are yeast? Do they respire? Seventh grade got to find out this week by mixing up yeast, water, and sugar, then observing to see if the indicator bromothymol blue turned yellow from exhaled carbon dioxide. In the process, they also learned more about how we make bread! Later in the week, they investigated how a cell membrane works by making a model of a cell with a sandwich bag, water, cornstarch, and Lugol's solution. The results were fairly surprising! The Mustang Cup Awakens... With dance class over, Mustang Cup could return to its monthly slot during intervention! Teams enjoyed Easter-themed games this time, with Peep in a Basket, Peep Tower Challenge, Resurrection Trivia, and some good old-fashioned riddles. The Cup has changed who's in the lead -- check out the leaderboard to the right! Distilling dystopia... To refresh their brains and practice a bit of close reading, sixth grade did a literary scavenger hunt to look for dystopian elements in The Giver. This was a great way for us to begin discussing how an author expands a dystopian motif or theme throughout the story. Thursday Night Live... All of the middle schoolers have been busy preparing their scenes for the spring show! To aid in their risk-taking endeavors, the eighth graders spent a portion of their class doing improvisational activities. They definitely thought outside of the box and came up with some VERY creative ways to describe an activity without using any words, only their bodies. This year, the annual spring Art and Music show will be on Thursday, May 25th, at 6:30. The third through eighth graders will be presenting "The Granny Awards." Looking ahead... Aspire testing is next week! Be sure to drop well-rested, well-fed students off on time. PILLARS will provide snacks. See below for the adjusted schedule for the week.
