Guided by Ms. Nolan, the seventh grade got moving this week in math class! They calculated their resting and exercising heart rates, as well as their target heart rates using proportions. They jogged in place for one minute during class to get their exercising heart rate, causing some excellent photo opportunities.
Much to our chagrin, Dank Haus did not have any recycling bins... till now. In advisory and religion, the sixth and seventh graders learned about their carbon footprint and about being stewards of the Earth. Next, they used that information to write letters to local businesses requesting donations of bins for our recyclables. Paris, Nicole, and Ms. Scheiber took the letters to Sears and advocated on behalf of the middle school. They spoke to two managers about why recycling is important to St. Matthias. This week, Sears called to inform us that they would be able to donate all the bins we need. Paris and Nicole gladly returned to pick up the bins and to express our gratitude. We are very excited to begin recycling more responsibly at Dank Haus!
The eighth graders put their creative hats on this week in language arts. They worked cooperatively in groups to write original songs using the themes of Romeo and Juliet. Each group performed their song to the class, filling the classroom with their beautiful voices and wit. Now, if only we could get them to sing in Mass...
Today, the entire school gathered in the gym to celebrate our St. Matthias Mustangs! After introducing our all-star athletes, the coaches turned the microphone over to the MCs, Keith & Fimy. Many thanks to the parents, coaches, and teachers who helped to organize this fun-filled pep rally!
Later in the evening, the seventh and eighth grade basketball teams played at Amundsen High School. It was wonderful to see so many St. Matthias families pack the gym to cheer on our students. The seventh grade boys played a tough game, ultimately losing in the final seconds. The eighth grade boys and girls team defeated their opponents, bringing the crowd to its feet. You can't keep the Mustangs down!
