The seventh grade students used their senses to sniff out the most valuable commodity of the Age of Exploration - spices! If your spice cabinet is overflowing, we have some ideas for you. Cloves can be used in a pinch to numb a wound, cinnamon can double as a cosmetic or perfume, and dill can be helpful if you need to mummify something on the fly. Who knew?!
The seventh and eight grade students cleared out the cobwebs in their brains by practicing Spanish vocabulary terms. Posing as TV reporters, the students interviewed one another and presented the information to the class. What a fun way to practice Spanish - and get to know one another!
Ms. Scheiber and the eighth grade students took the IB learner profile trait balanced to a scientific realm this week. The students measured mystery objects' masses. Using the volumes they had measured the previous class, these thinkers then calculated the density of each mystery object. Finally, our knowledgeable students identified the material each object was made of by comparing their calculated densities to known values. We even had some risk-takers make ridiculous faces for the photos to show off their seriousness!
Ms. Kanaley and the eighth grade class led the St. Matthias community in prayer at Mass this week. Fr. Larry spends his Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the Dank Haus, but he made a special trip this week to help this class plan their Mass. In a few short months, these young men and women will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation!
They were just too busy learning the ropes at Dank Haus to pose for pictures! Check back next week for the spotlight on sixth as we continue to induct them into the joys of IB learning.
Although we may complain about the high temperatures, we are enjoying every last minute of recess during the warm weather. Pretty soon, we will be bundled up from head to toe... in the snow!
There is no school on Monday, September 5 (Labor Day)!
Back to School Night will be held on Tuesday, September 6 at 6:00 PM. This year, we will provide sessions tailored to specific groups. Ms. Scheiber and Ms. McKenna will lead a session for new and sixth grade families (music room). Ms. Denten, Ms. Nolan, and Ms. Kanaley will lead a session for seventh and eighth grade families (art room).
October lunch forms must be returned by Friday, September 9.
September 18 is Catechetical Sunday. Please join us for 10:30 Mass at St. Matthias.
