The sixth graders became experts of the Ozarks this week. We looked at how the setting of a novel impacts character decisions and behaviors. The students worked cooperatively in groups to define the setting of "Where the Red Fern Grows" using text evidence. We now have a greater understanding as to why Billy worked so hard to earn his hounds!
Mrs. Reckamp's Spring Music Show is looking good! Check out the sixth and seventh grade students practicing their scene, titled "Let the Games Begin". We can't wait to see the final product on May 26!
The eighth grade had a busy week in language arts. First, we examined the role the media played during the Little Rock crisis. Working in groups, the students took on the role of a newspaper in 1957 and attempted to cover the story by creating a front page. Then, the eighth grade took a deeper look into the meaning of integration. We analyzed the diary entries of our main character, Melba, through a silent gallery walk to understand the effect it had on her and her family. Next, we constructed our own definitions of the word "integration" from different perspectives in 1957.
The eighth graders started their Friday with some quality buddy time. After celebrating Mass with the whole student body, they read books with Ms. O'Donnell's class and had recess with both Ms. O'Donnell and Ms. Garber's classes. We will take any excuse to enjoy the sunshine!
To cap off a fantastic Friday, eighth graders Jeremy and Victor led the school in cleaning our campus. As a culmination of the MYP Programme, all eighth grade students designed and implemented a Community Project. Congratulations to Jeremy and Victor for finishing this phase of the project!
This week, Ms. Denten, Ms. Scheiber, Ms. Kanaley, and Mrs. Jensen were fortunate enough to spend five glorious days at an IB Conference in St. Pete Beach, Florida. They brought the warm weather back with them, too!
