Thank you to Student Council for promoting Breast Cancer Awareness at St. Matthias this month! We raised $322 on our "Pay for Pink" dress down day on Thursday. Proceeds will be donated to Presence St. Joseph Hospital to benefit breast cancer research.
Big Shoulders Fund posed this question to our eighth grade class. Thanks to generous donors, these lucky students will be participating in a special economics class and will invest $3,000 in stocks of their choice. Several times a month, representatives from Big Shoulders teach a class about wise investments and give students a chance to practice real world skills. Last year, the class of 2015 came in third place among all of the Chicago schools participating in this program. Let's see if the class of 2016 can come in first place!
The seventh grade created their own museum exhibits in I&S as part of their Immigration Unit. Each student research his or her family's immigration story as well as the immigration history of a group of their choice. On Tuesday from 10:45-11:45, the seventh grade will have the chance to share their projects with the sixth and eighth grades during a gallery walk in the cafeteria. Families are welcome to join us at Dank Haus to enjoy these amazing exhibits!
As part of our ongoing Imperialism unit, the eighth grade students adopted historical perspectives of historical figures involved in the British Raj. Today, they prepared and presented impassioned speeches about whether or not British involvement in India was a blessing or a curse. I was impressed with their confidence, as well as their use of unit vocabulary and supportive evidence.
Each week, the seventh grade gets a double dose of Ms. Scheiber's instruction. This week, they honed their observation skills and stretched their creativity. First, they examined blackworms in small groups, making inferences based on scientific observations. Then, in religion, they created a ritual to explain the effects of the Sacrament of Confirmation.
Do you have loose change in your car? At the bottom of your purse? In between your couch cushions? Send it with your students to benefit St. Matthias! Student Council is making and selling Tootsie Pop Ghosts for $0.50 through October 27. In order to provide exciting activities for our student population throughout the year, we need to raise money! Please support our Student Council!
Mark your Calendars... Just a few reminders for some important upcoming dates. Sunday, October 18 is the sacramental enrollment Mass at St. Matthias. Eighth grade families, please join us for 10:30 AM Mass to officially begin and celebrate your student's year of Confirmation preparation. Please contact Mrs. McGovern and Ms. Denten if your student is not able to attend this Mass. Tuesday, October 20 is picture day at Dank Haus. Please return the order forms to your student's advisory teacher. Students are advised to avoid wearing green so as not to blend in with the background. Friday, October 23 is everyone's favorite day -- Parent Teacher Conferences! Students will not have school on Friday, but parents and teachers are expected to report to St. Matthias promptly at their scheduled conference time. Please contact your student's advisory teacher if you did not receive a conference confirmation form. |
